Staged Performance XL
& Concert Version
The Bird of a Thousand Voices comes in two experiences: the ‘Concert Version’—a live music performance by Tigran Hamasyan and band, and the ‘Staged Performance XL’—an extended theatrical adaptation directed by Ruben Van Leer.
The Bird of a Thousand Voices brings to life an ancient Armenian myth through an immersive fusion of music, storytelling, and visual art. Guided by the celebrated pianist and composer Tigran Hamasyan and visionary director Ruben Van Leer, this music theater production reimagines the mystical tale of the Hazaran Blbul—a legendary creature whose song has the power to restore harmony to the world.
Audiences are taken on a poetic journey through black, white, and red worlds—boundless deserts, frigid mountain winters, and turbulent rivers—as prins Areg seeks the elusive bird in the story. With angelic vocals by Areni Agbabian, an intricate bilingual libretto by Florian Hellwig, and a kinetic light installation designed by Boris Acket, the production combines semi-improvised music and dramatic staging to create an unforgettable sensory experience.
The show explores universal themes of resilience, renewal, and unity. A kinetic art installation, libretto adaptation to the traditional story of Hazaran Blbul and interactive light design deepen the narrative’s impact, drawing viewers into an evocative exploration of maternal storytelling and the mythological symbols that connect cultures.
The Bird of a Thousand Voices promises a captivating, transformative experience for anyone drawn to the power of art and myth.
In addition to the full "XL Staged Show" experience, Hamasyan performs a ‘concert version’ featuring the music alone, without the staging and narrative elements, showcasing the versatility of this rich transmedia production.
